What is the Hospital Committee Ministry?

Basically you are volunteering to visit church members who are inpatients in local hospitals offering them love, comfort, encouragement and support.

How much time is required?

Approximately one week each quarter. How much time is required during your scheduled week depends on how many church members are hospitalized.

Do I visit only women members?

No. As a ministry we try to visit all Burnt Hickory members (men, women and children) as well as their immediate family members who are hospitalized in the metropolitan area.

What if I am only able to visit at hospitals located close to my home such as Kennestone or Cobb?

Not a problem. We have volunteers who can cover the other hospitals for you.

On my scheduled week how will I get the names of those hospitalized and all the info I need?

You will receive daily e-mails listing all members who need to be visited, the names of the hospitals where they are admitted, the hospital room numbers and a brief description of the patient’s condition. You will also be notified daily if there are no visits to be made.

What happens if I am unable to visit on my scheduled week or on a particular day of that week?

You should contact the Hospital Ministry Director as soon as possible so that other arrangements can be made. This is very important to ensure that everyone hospitalized receives a visit.

What if I forget my week?

A day or two before the week you are scheduled, you will receive a call from the director to remind you that it is your week to visit.

Do I need any supplies? If so, where do I get them?

Yes. When you first become a volunteer, you will meet with the Hospital Director who will give you a packet of information (a schedule, stamped Visitation Record Postcards and a supply of gift bags).

What Items, specifically, are put in the gift bags?

  • Women – lotion, chapstick, small notebook, pen, candy, chewing gum, breath mints, popcorn, crackers, soaps, hand sanitizer, Journey Devotional, Home Life Magazine, thank you cards, stationery and ministry card, etc...
  • Mom/New Baby – lotion, chapstick, baby shampoo, baby lotion, baby powder, baby bath, baby washcloth, baby booties, notebook, pen, candy, crackers, popcorn, Journey Devotional, Parent Life Magazine and ministry card, etc…
  • Men – notebook, pen, chapstick, crossword puzzles, word search books, candy, chewing gum, breath mints, popcorn, crackers, Stand Firm Devotional and ministry card, etc…
  • Child – books, coloring books, crayons, bubbles, suckers, play dough, toy slinky and ministry card, etc…

What are my duties?

  • On your scheduled week check your e-mail daily to see who needs to be visited.
  • Before visiting, call the hospital to confirm that the member is still there.
  • Prepare the gift bag for the visit.
  • Pray before each visit asking the Lord to be with you and help you offer them love, comfort, encouragement and support.
  • Deliver the gift bag to the member’s room and let the Lord speak through you. You may or may not feel led to pray. Trust in the Lord and He will take care of the rest!
  • After each visit, complete a Hospital Visitation Record Postcard. At the end of your scheduled week, mail all stamped postcards to the director.
